Whitchurch Silkmill

Silk Mill Front

The mill was built on the River Test in Hampshire in 1800, during the reign of King George III. Silk has been woven here since the 1820/1830s. Now a working museum open to the public, the mill produces high quality silks to order for theatrical costume, interior designers and historic houses.

Raw silk is used  in the American, or Mareezo method of scagliola, making Whitchurch a perfect setting for the exhibition

"Now and Then"16th-31st August 2008. Boathouse 4. Portsmouth Historic dockyard

12,000 visitors. Huge success. Read about it in the SHIP's Diary pages. To commission work, attend courses or demonstrations:contact SHIP's email:

skillsheritageportsmouth@yahoo.co.uk

Demonstrations were held every day. Graining by Seamus Gordon, gilding by Kelly Hickman and working with egg tempera by Sue Viner. John Tappy a former tutor from the university and John Vardon, president of Solent carvers demonstrated architectural carving and the coloured plasterwork by Tracey Ward, who is also an excellent carver.See the SHIP's diary to hear much more about the exhibition.

The central area dislpayed the digital images and drawings/photographs for the cell block proposal. They can be viewed in more detail on the cell block conversion pages. The dresser with gilded and enamelled panels was sold. Glen Filer restored this beautiful fire surround and Tracey Ward faux finished this horse's head to imitate green serpentine marble.

This plaster panel was copied by John Fowler from a Jacobean strapwork ceiling and was made in his flat  on the third floor . It was carried down three flights of stairs and brought by friends to the exhibition. It measured 2mx 1.50m and will be  the canopy for a four poster bed. As you can see it is exquisite. There will soon be more examples pasted on this site-so watch this space.
